The newest branch of the Scouts family tree

Squirrels is Scouts where young people aged 4 to 6 can join in too.

Achieving anything they set their minds to, and having lots of fun

Squirrels gives young people the opportunity to take their first steps into being part of Scouts.

Squirrels are young people aged 4 to 6 who want to learn through stories, having fun and playing games. They'll get active, get outside, become brilliant builders and super chefs. There's something for everyone.

Squirrels is packed full of outdoor activities, fun, games, laugher and so much more to help our youngest members start learning the skills they need for life, and we can't wait to get started!

Squirrels complete their challenge awards to earn the top award for the section

Like every other Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer, being a Squirrel is all about giving new things a go, and growing as a young person. From their very first day, Squirrels people take part in activities that are so much fun, you won’t even realise that you’re earning badges and awards. You’ll start with your World Membership Badge, and go from there, and - before too long - you'll be going to visit a Beaver colony with all sorts of badges all over your sweater!

Over 400 volunteers across the country have come together to write, test and update the Squirrels programme and created loads of amazing badges for all of our Squirrels to work towards. We found out that, like all other Scouts, Squirrels wanted to earn Activity Badges, Challenge Awards and work towards a Top Award – the Chief Scout's Acorn Award.

Earning challenge awards and activity badges

We've spent a lot of time putting Challenge awards together - developed around the themes of teamwork, citizenship, personal development, outdoors and adventure - that are achievable, relevant and exciting! Each Challenge Award challenges our Squirrels in an age-appropriate way, and they've all been designed to help our Squirrels volunteers plan sessions around them to help our Squirrels develop a good range of skills and outcomes.

Our Squirrel Scout Leaders will talk to you about the badges your young person can work on outside of Squirrels, and let you know how your Squirrel can tell us all about the work they're doing towards them.

You will soon be able to look at all the activity badges that Squirrels can work towards on the Scouts website.

Join Squirrels at a group in Warwick District

We welcome all young people between 4 and 6 years of age

Warwick has some of the first Squirrels dreys in South Warwickshire, so joining Squirrels with us will be a great way to get your young person started on their Scouting journey. All of our groups in Warwick have a fantastic track record of keeping young people interested, with many of our Explorers having started their journey with us as Beavers many years ago, and we look forward to seeing our Squirrels grow into amazing Explorers in the years to come.

Squirrels, like all of our other sections, is open to all, and we are usually able to tweak things to make sure that everyone is able to join in the fun. If you've got any questions about how we can make Squirrels accessible to your young person, get in touch with us and we'll have a chat. Being upfront from the start gives us the advantage of being able to work together in partnership to ensure that your young person has the best possible experience in Scouts.

What you’ll need in order to join

All you need to do is register your details on our new members waiting list. As soon as your young person reaches the age to join Squirrels, and when we have a space in a drey near you, one of our Squirrel Scout Leaders will get in touch with you and invite you and your young person to your first session.

You won't need a uniform to join Squirrels, but once you've joined and settled in, you'll be earning all sorts of brilliant badges, so you'll need somewhere to put them. When your young person is nearly ready to make their Promise, we’ll let you know how to get your uniform.

Invest in your young person’s future with us

By joining Scouts, your young person becomes part of a worldwide movement, dedicated to helping them develop skills they can use in the real world, while having fun, adventure and making new friends. Many of our Scout Groups across the District offer a free trial to help you decide whether Squirrels is for you and your young person. After this, membership subscription fees will become due.
